Zostavax is a shingles vaccine manufactured by Merck. It is intended for the prevention of herpes zoster, which is more commonly known as the shingles virus. Zostavax can cause the development of a viral infection and/or a reoccurring strain of shingles leading to hospitalizations and chronic nerve pain. This chronic nerve pain is called post-herpetic neuralgia, which may be more difficult to treat. Viral illnesses are not one of the risks the Center for Disease Control mentions for this vaccine.
