Fluoroquinolones are a type of antibiotic such as ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and levofloxacin (Levaquin). Cipro and Levaquin are used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections and cellulitis.

On December 20, 2018, the FDA ordered that manufacturers of fluoroquinolones such as Cipro and Levaquin must now warn about the risk of aortic dissection or aneurysm in certain patients associated with systemic use (given by mouth or through an injection) of these antibiotics. The FDA also reported that this class of antibiotic agent should not be used for uncomplicated infections because of the risk of adverse effects. The new label warning states that fluoroquinolones should not be used in patients "with a history of blockages or aneurysms (abnormal bulges) of the aorta or other blood vessels, high blood pressure, certain genetic disorders that involve blood vessel changes, and the elderly."
