TOPICS - Asbestos

Asbestos is a fiber that has been commonly used as a fire retardant and for insulation. Asbestos has been used in roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, cement products, textiles and coatings. The inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause serious illness including malignant lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.

It is believed that asbestos is still a hazard for an estimated 1.3 million U.S. workers in the construction industry and for workers involved in the maintenance of buildings and equipment. Workers involved in building demolition or renovation activities and workers doing automotive brake and clutch work can also be exposed to asbestos. People were exposed to asbestos from the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and from debris in hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
